Η Οικονομική και Κοινωνική Επιτροπή ως θεσμικό όργανο της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης

Abstract

The present study discusses the role and responsibilities of the European Economic and Social Committee (E.E.S.C.) as an institutional body of the European Union (E.U.). The first part examines the evolution of the institution from its foundation in 1958 by the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community (E.E.C.), emphasizing in the gradual widening of its scope of action throughout the european integration. The second part analyses E.E.S.C.’s organization and function and its contribution to the promotion of social dialogue and consultation in a european level. The third part of the study concerns the Economic and Social Council of Greece as an institution of the national framework, emphasizing in its constitution, its role and responsibilities and its contribution to the policy making process. In order for this study to be realized, the european and the national legal framework, the official websites and the publications of both institutions and the relevant bibliography were thoroughly examined. In addition, interviews were conducted with scientific partners of the Economic and Social Council of Greece at its premises and there was contact via e-mail with the E.E.S.C. and members of its Plenary. In the end, conclusions are drawn on the role and the contribution of the examined bodies within the european and national institutional framework and proposals are made for the improvement of their function and impact.
