Abstract

This paper examines the trade relations between Greece and the European Union with the use of longitudinal data and in the light of the theory of economic integration. More specifically, at first, we present the course of the EU during the stages of economic deepening and then the path of Greece in each step of its participation, first in the European Economic Community and later on, in the European Union. Then, the commercial results of Greece are periodically compared, starting with the Association Agreement with the EEC, then the customs union and the single market, and finally the monetary union, until the last decade of the economic crisis. The quantitative and qualitative results drawn from the Greek trade balance of goods and services with both the E.U. and third countries are accompanied by a case study about the course of the Greek agricultural sector during these years. The following research and collection of statistical data aspires to set the basis for further sectoral analyses and link the course of the economic integration with that of the Greek export activity, in order to draw useful conclusions about the current situation of the Greek trade, especially in the event of a further deepening of the EU economy in the future.
