Abstract

Regulation (EU) 910/2014, known as the eIDAS Regulation, is the first EU legislation to put a coherent framework for electronic identification and trust services into effect. Its main goal is to strengthen the digital single market in the EU, through the interoperability of national electronic identification systems and the introduction of the concept of "trust" in electronic transactions. Although a few years late, the Greek public administration has based its digital transformation on many of the eIDAS forecasts. The eIDAS Regulation was the trigger for innovations in the digital transformation of the Greek public administration. Its implementation raised significant prospects for both public and private sectors. This paper presents the institutional framework regarding the Regulation and its implementation in Greece, a case study for the introduction and utilization of a service provided in the Regulation and a new proposal for the introduction of a service in the public sector (issuing public documents through gov.gr), in which at least one trust service is used. Finally, the main provisions of the proposed amendment to the Regulation – particularly the enactment of the European digital identity – are introduced.
