Abstract

The subject of this assignment is Public Health Services’ evolution from 1983 until today. Through the presentation of the institutional framework and comparative analysis of the reforms that took place the last three decades there is an attempt to answer the basic assumptions, which are related to meeting the health needs of citizens, the existence of organizational and administrative guidance, the possibilities of adapting to the crisis and response to changing health and social care needs of the citizens, to the effect that health services receive due to temporary political and social developments, and finally if public health services meet the basic principles of the common European Healthcare Model. In the introduction some general theories on health, the European Union's contribution in health policies and the country’s Development Strategy for Health 2014-2020 are mentioned. The first chapter, after a short historical review, is a brief survey of health systems and the Public Health Services in Greece. The second chapter presents the evolution of the institutional framework of the Public Health Services in Greece from 1983 to date, the social protection and the contribution of the private sector in health service structures. The third chapter is a critical evaluation of three decades and the basic assumptions are answered. There is a weakness of the Greek health system to fully meet the current health needs despite the improvements that have occurred. Finally, in the fourth chapter some general conclusions about the evolution of Greek health system and some suggestions aiming to the remodeling and adaptation of the system to emerging social and economic requirements are formulated.
