Abstract

The topic addressed in this paper is "The phenomenon of harassment and abuse in Greece: Policy approaches and social actions". The need to highlight this phenomenon emerged from the sharp increase in the number of reports of domestic violence, sexual harassment and abuse of power and the subsequent emergence and recognition of social movements such as Metoo. The subjects of this study, in particular, are the phenomena of spousal violence, as a form of domestic violence, as well as sexual harassment in the workplace. Common characteristics of the above are their gender dimension, their timeless and timely character, and their characterization as phenomena of power abuse. The aim of the study is, firstly, to highlight the phenomenon of abuse as a social problem. In particular, it attempts to link abusive behaviour to social factors such as prejudices and stereotypes about gender role and prevailing perceptions of the position of women. As a result of the above there is the manifestation of gender discrimination, gender-based violence and, in particular, violence against women. 5 Considering the above, this paper analyses spousal/partner violence against women and the factors that perpetuate spousal abuse. In addition, it presents incidents that shocked the Greek public opinion and resulted in a number of femicides, as well as statistics to prove the seriousness of the problem. Subsequently, and due to the simultaneous emergence of the Metoo movement, the phenomenon of sexual harassment, especially in the workplace, is described. The forms of abusive behaviour, the causes of the problem and its impact on victims and society as a whole are studied. Under these circumstances, the study delves into the legislative framework of abusive behaviour, as well as the analysis of the existing structures and actions of the State and of civil society. In conclusion, proposals are presented to address the phenomena of violence and harassment, as highlighted by recent initiatives
