ΙΣΟΤΗΤΑ ΤΩΝ ΦΥΛΩΝ ΣΤΗΝ ΕΛΛΑΔΑ: ΠΑΡΟΥΣΑ ΚΑΤΑΣΤΑΣΗ, ΝΟΜΟΘΕΣΙΑ, ΠΟΛΙΤΙΚΕΣ, ΕΙΔΙΚΑ ΖΗΤΗΜΑΤΑ

Abstract

The present thesis deals with the issue of gender equality in Greece. Starting with a brief historical overview of the status of women from the 19th century until today, the existence of de facto gender equality in modern greek society is investigated. Searching the legal vesting of gender equality, the thesis examines the greek law system and international and european law, which are proved to be the elements that promote and formulate relevant policies. Furthermore the applicable actions to strengthen women's rights are critically described and approached. Also reference is made to the role of civil society as a factor of influence in decision-making process. In surveying the actual conditions of equality between women and men, examples of gender inequalities are given on the basis of statistical data in comparison to the european mean. Moreover, some particular fields of violation of women's rights, which are of interest to Greece, are analyzed. This thesis concludes that there is de jure but not de facto gender equality in Greece. Following the conclusion are made some suggestions for achieving substantive gender equality.
