Earthquake is a natural phenomenon which can inflict major catastrophic consequences to
the man-made environment, in very little time and without substantial warning. Its
consequences are multifaceted, extend to many sectors of social and economic life and do
not only affect the immediate destruction area but much wider areas (regions, states).
Greece is a country in which strong earthquakes often occur with significant consequences.
Therefore, the adoption of an anti-earthquake public policy is necessary, aiming in the
gradual reduction of consequences for the country’s inhabitants and the creation of
“earthquake resistant” cities.
The present study attempts to briefly outline the counter-earthquake policy in Greece, its
axes of evolution and to critically comment on its field application. In this context, the
management of the destructive earthquake events in January 26th and February 3rd of 2014
in Kefallonia, is presented. Subsequently, a critical evaluation of the results of this
management is attempted in order to highlight weaknesses and margins of improvement as
well as the statement of proposals for a more effective implementation of the seismic
national policy.
