The research aim of the dissertation is to investigate the relationship between fake
news, social networks and misinformation mechanisms, while the method of research
is the literature review. It is rather clear that social networks are now part of everyday
life for billions of people around the world: Through them they have fun, consume,
communicate and be informed. Their existence undoubtedly has many positive effects
but it is not devoid of effects in various areas of human activity. False news and
misinformation in general, are one of the most important effects of the quasi domination of social networks. Misinformation in its various forms has almost always
been present in human history. However, the rapid development of technology and
social networks with their special features, gave another dynamic and mechanisms to
misinformation and false news. One area where misinformation "thrives" is politics.
In this field, with the help of computer tools such as bots and algorithms, new
mechanisms of political manipulation and influence of individuals are emerging. The
application of political propaganda through the mechanisms of misinformation has
been applied to various top political events such as the election campaigns in the USA
and France, the vote for the withdrawal of Great Britain from the European Union and
the annexation of Crimea by Russia. The rapid spread of the phenomenon has led both
nation states and the EU to take action against large corporations that control social
networks. At the same time, on another level, tools have been developed and are
constantly being developed to detect false news and misinformation mechanisms.
