The way in which the tourism phenomenon evolves and the tourism product develops, demonstrates the lack of strategic planning in the country, as its massive character does not go hand in hand with the requirements of sustainable development and the promotion of the cultural and environmental stock. The existence of available natural and cultural resources, gave the impetus for tourism to be today one of the main pillars of economic growth and attracting investment interest. Of course, the model that finally prevailed, anarchically and without planning, is based on the conventional forms of tourism development, where the model "sun-sea-entertainment" dominates, a fact both in the overexploitation and deterioration of the natural and cultural heritage.
Within the principles of sustainable and sustainable development, alternative forms of tourism are at the forefront and evolving, as new data emerge in the creation of tourism products to meet on the one hand the growing special needs of tourists - visitors and on the other to take into account the protection of nature and cultural wealth. In our country, the element of culture is directly related to tourism, giving the basis for the development of cultural tourism, as one of its alternative forms. Strengthening the protection, preservation and promotion of cultural and natural heritage has created the basic conditions for action, giving new impetus to the establishment of alternative forms of tourism, such as cultural, creating the need for the development of an organized planning.
The analysis of cultural routes and their correlation with the concepts of sustainable tourism
and cultural heritage will be attempted, based on theoretical bibliographic data, aiming to determine their importance and their contribution to the revitalization of an area. In the present work, an attempt is made to investigate cultural routes in Europe and Greece as well
The main purpose of this paper, is to analyze and link the concepts of sustainable development, sustainable tourism, cultural and natural heritage. The concept of sustainability requires the development of new management models and tools that will enrich sustainable and alternative forms of tourism, such as cultural tourism, including the "cultural route", ie touring places of cultural interest that can be harmoniously combined with the elements of the natural environment.
After all, the natural and cultural environment are inextricably linked, as reflected in Article 24 of the Greek Constitution. The aim of this work is to investigate the contribution of cultural routes in the promotion and preservation of cultural and environmental stock, within a framework for the development of a sustainable tourism product, with an environmental sign, contributing to the strengthening of local economies and economic development of the country.
