The subject of this paper is the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and its implementation in Greece. The Convention, adopted in 2003 by the General Conference of the UNESCO, establishes the concern for the safeguarding and promotion of the intangible aspects of cultural heritage at the global level. Greece ratified the Convention by the Law 3521/2006 (Official Government Gazette 275/A΄/22-12-2006) and since then has been taking the measures provided in the Convention for the documentation, protection and promotion of intangible heritage.
In this light, the main purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of the implementation of the Convention on the management of intangible cultural heritage in Greece. In order to achieve this objective, a presentation of the elements of the Greek heritage inscribed on the UNESCO’s international lists of intangible cultural heritage is made and the procedures and practices of intangible heritage management at national level are examined. For a better approach to the issue, a case study is used, namely the “Polyphonic Caravan, researching, safeguarding and promoting the Epirus polyphonic song”, which was inscribed in 2020 in the UNESCO’s Register of Good Safeguarding Practices. Through the mapping and evaluation of the data, conclusions are drawn on the impact of the implementation of the Convention in Greece and the emerging perspectives and opportunities for the optimal management of intangible heritage are highlighted.
