This essay examines the impacts of the economic (debt) crisis on the Greek economy, in
terms of unemployment and mobility (labour and geographical). For this purpose, a
series of data has been employed and handled, derived from Hellenic Statistical
Authority (ELSTAT), concerning both unemployment and changes in all sectors of
economic activity, from 2009 to the first quarter of 2015.
More specifically, the current study presents the concepts and types of unemployment,
the theoretical approaches of the phenomenon, as well as the impacts it bears on various
economic measures. Furthermore, the essay analyses the characteristics of
unemployment (distribution of unemployment by sex, age, region and production
sectors) focusing on the years before and during the economic depression. It presents
also, the types and the quantitative dimension of mobility, its importance within EU, as
well as the prospects and the problems that emerge. Finally, it gives a brief overview of
unemployment and mobility with conclusions and recommendations regarding the role
of mobility in the increase of employment.
