The present work aims to investigate the presence of open public data in the field of education at national and international level, through the literature review and comparative presentation of the official portals and websites of Greece, European Union, United Kingdom and United States of America. In the light of the open availability of not only quantitative but also qualitative data, the benefits expected for education executives, student, educational and research community, parents, public administration and society as a whole are outlined.
At the same time, best practices are sought internationally and the possibilities of their application in our country are examined. In particular, the case of the East Sussex County Council is being studied through the UK data portal as a source of inspiration for taking a similar initiative in Greece. The following is an indicative proposal for the creation of an official website at the local government level that has, among other things, all the public data related to the educational units of the area, through the assistance of the local education directorates that are responsible for collecting and their classification. This data is expected to enrich the Greek data portal, covering an existing deficit in open education data. The production and distribution of more and better education data in our country is considered a difficult task, as it requires institutional and methodological interventions, but is not considered impossible, as it is in line with the strategic directions for a digital and effective education.
