The protection of intangible cultural heritage is an important issue for states and local communities, which are responsible for its preservation. After the signing of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2003, the debate on the protection of the intangible cultural heritage of mankind has opened up both nationally and internationally. Greece has managed to register 55 items in the National Index, 8 items in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO) and 1 item in the List of Good Preservation Practices. After about 20 years of the Convention, the concept of intangible cultural heritage has been linked to the terms of sustainable development and cultural tourism, providing local communities with new perspectives.
The Epirotic lament having its origins in the lament, which is the oldest type of song sung by man, is undoubtedly a cultural heritage of the Epirotes, as they experience it and as it has been transmitted to them for generations by their ancestors. The evolution of the lament over the years from a simple lament song sung by professional mourners during the funeral customs of Epirus to polyphonic initially and then to an orchestral song sung at all social events makes it unique worldwide. This uniqueness, with the guidance of the administration and with proper cultural management, can be a springboard for development, reorganization and creation for local communities.
